Kill Richard Gere

Is India quickly rising as a Taliban-style state from which we need to be concerned about terrorists?

The latest involves angry mobs who burned effigies of Richard Gere because he hugged and kissed Bollywood acress, Shilpa Shetty, during an AIDS awareness event. Shilpa Shetty pictures were also burned.

Apparently, they did not like the fact that Richard and Shilpa engaged in a public display of affection.

This is an example of what you cannot do in India without fearing for your life:

Richard Gere and Shilpa Shetty

It looks like Shilpa and Richard are having a good time.

No obscene groping. No nudity. Oh no, Shilpa is holding a phallic symbol. Off with her head!

The people of India need to take an inward look at themselves and decide if this inhuman intolerance is what they want to be known for – and then to kick out and criticize the radicals who obsess over someone else’s public displays of affection.

“They sat on a sofa and they were supposed to sit on the floor”

One of the reasons why an Indian court is considering criminally prosecuting Elizabeth Hurley and her husband for mocking Hindu traditions during their wedding.  They also kissed near a sacred fire.  She faces up to 3 years in prison.

This will probably get me the death penalty in India, but this is unbelievably stupid.  Which is why it is in the news.  They sat on a sofa instead of sitting on the floor???  Time to get some new traditions.  Sounds to me like the Hindu version of the Taliban.  Perhaps the idiot making the claim should be prosecuted for making a mockery of the Hindu religion.

Switzerland Invades Liechtenstein

Funny story on the wires today about Swiss soldiers getting lost overnight and actually ending up a mile inside Liechtenstein.  Apparently, Liechtenstein has a population of 34,000 and no army to defend itself.

I was surprised to learn that the Swiss have an army.  With the country’s famous position of neutrality I assumed not needing an army came along with it.  Maybe they are only used to guard the secret Swiss bank accounts.

Gunpoint is Not Coercion

Hundreds of thousands of women were forced to work as sex slaves, or “comfort women,” making the military occupation of Asian countries by the Japanese military in the 1930s and 1940s more enjoyable.

Now, the Japanese Prime Minister says “there is no evidence to prove there was coercion.”  All these women did it voluntarily.

After all, wasn’t that the dream of every 13 year old Chinese girl, to service Japanese soldiers for free?

Aside from the documentation, personal accounts from Japanese soldiers, and of course personal accounts from the comfort women – nope, “no” evidence at all to be found anywhere.

Coming next week … the Japanese Prime Minister explains that there is no evidence the Japanese invaded China or Korea.  They were asked in.

We’re a News Source But Don’t Want to be Read

There was a link on the Drudge Report today to an article on the Durham Herald Sun’s website about the Duke lacrosse rape case.  Clicking the link resulted in the following notice on the Herald Sun’s website:

“Due to high traffic, this story is no longer available on our web site.”

They should have said:

“Due to our creating a popular story that a lot of people wanted to read, instead of profiting from that and relishing the good luck in having a high-trafficked site like the Drudge Report send us and our advertisers many readers, we have decided to pull the story.

Instead of sending readers to the home page of our newspaper we are telling people to pound sand.

Of course, the high traffic volume to our website may be used in setting higher prices in the future for our online advertisers.  We’re sure our advertisers do not want anyone to see their ads, because if we have a popular story that could bring thousands upon thousands of eyeballs to see our advertisers ads, we will delete the story.”

We Knew What Was Going to Happen in Iraq – and Still Had No Post-Saddam Planning

Dick Cheney, then secretary of defense, appearing on “This Week with David Brinkley” in April 1991, he rightly rejected a march to Baghdad in the effort to turn back Iraq’s conquest of Kuwait.”Once we got to Baghdad, what would we do?” he asked. “Who would we put in power? What kind of government would we have? Would it be a Sunni government, a Shia government, a Kurdish government? Would it be secular along the lines of the Ba’ath Party? Would it be fundamentalist Islamic? I do not think the United States wants to have U.S. military forces accept casualties and accept the responsibility of trying to govern Iraq. I think it makes no sense at all.”

Then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell wrote in Foreign Affairs in October 1992 that going on to Baghdad would have been “an unpardonable expense in terms of money, lives lost and ruined regional relationships.”

He asked: “Would it have been worth the inevitable follow-up: major occupation forces in Iraq for years to come and a very expensive and complex American proconsulship in Baghdad?”

Powell’s answer: No.

And Brent Scowcroft, the national security adviser during the first Gulf War, wrote in a Sept. 1996 column in Newsweek: “If we had pressed on to Baghdad in 1991, we would have been on our own. And if we had succeeded in overthrowing Saddam, we would have confronted a choice between occupying Iraq with thousands of American troops for the indefinite future, and creating a gaping power vacuum in the Persian Gulf for Iran to fill.”

Annoying Cars

I saw this article about new car technology. Acually, forget the technology, just imagine how annoying it would be to hear “car approaching on the left” or “watch your speed” every few seconds.

Japanese carmaker Nissan has said it will mobilize 10,000 drivers in a 30-month experiment to develop an "intelligent transportation system" that sends wireless messages to passing cars.

"Car approaching from left" and "School ahead. Watch your speed," are two voice messages which drivers will receive through the system which uses information obtained from nearby vehicles and roadside optical beacons.

He’s Distressed – I’m Distressed

John Karr will not be charged with the death of JonBenet Ramsey. Big surprise. No one thought he did it once stories about this guy started coming soon after the original news broke.

Here is what his public defender had to say:

“We’re deeply distressed by the fact that they took this man and dragged him here from Bangkok, Thailand, with no forensic evidence confirming the allegations against him and no independent factors leading to a presumption that he did anything wrong.”

Of course that ignores the fact Karr CONFESSED to the crime and knew many detailed facts about the case.

This follows stories that his appointed attorneys tried to stop dna testing – because Karr knew the results would not match. How weird is that? An attorney fighting to prevent dna testing that would prove his client innocent, and then claiming ‘distress’ when it is shown his client was fraudulently claiming to be the killer.
I’m distress that this lunatic, even if not a killer, will be back on the streets. I believe he has a prior child pornography conviction, and his talk about young girls being his peer group is not right. I don’t know if wrongfully confessing to a crime is a crime, but this disturbed person needs treatment before he actually acts out the JonBenet case on another innocent young girl.
